Research notes
AMD simulation models three clinically distinct progression stages:
dry AMD with drusen (early-intermediate haze and contrast loss), geographic atrophy
(late dry AMD with central absolute scotoma), and wet neovascular AMD (choroidal
neovascularization causing metamorphopsia and rapid central scotoma). Peripheral
vision is preserved across all stages.

Clinical notes: M-cone weight set to 0.95 and S-cone to 0.85 to model
differential photoreceptor vulnerability in AMD — S-cones (short-wave/blue-sensitive) and
M-cones are preferentially affected in early AMD due to RPE dysfunction in the S-cone rich
parafovea and macular pigment loss. These settings approximate cone sensitivity changes;
they are simplified and intended for research/preview only — see model assumptions for limits.
Model assumptions & limits
- This model operates in sRGB; it approximates cone weighting by scaling channel contributions.
- Severity curves are heuristic (linear/sigmoid/gamma) and do not replace clinical diagnoses.
- ΔE and chromaticity measures use standard CIE conversions but depend on display/profile.
